El
12 de enero de 2010, un terremoto de 7.2 grados en escala Richter sacudió
Haití, el sismo tuvo su epicentro a 15 kilómetros de la capital del país,
Puerto Príncipe.
El
fenómeno natural causó en el país centroamericano más de 300,000 personas
muertas, 350,000 lesionadas y más de 1 millón de personas sin hogar.
El
presidente de Haití, René Préval, en ese momento declaró que la imagen en
Puerto Príncipe era “inimaginable”, explicando que “el parlamento se ha venido
abajo, la oficina de Hacienda se ha venido abajo, las escuelas se han
derrumbado, los hospitales se han derrumbado”.
El mandatario haitiano no se
encontraba en el palacio presidencial que se derrumbó cuando el desastre
natural se hizo presente.
Préval
coordinó a su gabinete de inmediato para pedir auxilio internacional, incluso
Elisabeth Préval, la Primera Dama, declaró: “necesitamos apoyo, necesitamos
ayuda, necesitamos ingenieros”.
Haití recibió ayuda inmediata por parte de Estados Unidos, República Dominicana, Cuba, y diferentes organismos internacionales como el Banco Mundial y la Cruz Roja Internacional quienes aportaron comida, dinero, voluntarios, bomberos, expertos en materia de búsqueda y rescate y perros de búsqueda.
La
Secretaría de Relaciones Exteriores de México (SRE), en su momento, informó que
se envió 15,000 toneladas de apoyo entre productos básicos como medicinas,
materiales de curación y cocinas comunitarias.
Asimismo,
la Secretaría de la Marina (Semar) y el Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social
(IMSS) enviaron médicos, enfermeras, rescatistas y expertos en materia de
construcción los cuales atendieron a cerca de 4,000 personas.

Haiti received immediate assistance from the United States, Dominican Republic, Cuba, and various international organizations like the World Bank and the International Red Cross who provided food, money, volunteers, firefighters, experts in search and rescue and search dogs.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Mexico (SRE), at the time, reported that 15,000 tons of support between commodities like medicines, materials and healing community kitchens were sent.
